A Frozen Flower brings on screen the forbidden love between the King Gongmin of Goryeo with the head of the Kunryongwe guards (a type of Royal Guards). During the Goryeo kingdom, the Mongol Yuan dynasty seized power in Korea. Forced to send soldiers and maidens to the Mongol emperor, the king of Goryeo is reduced to the status of a simple vassal. By tradition, he married the daughter of the Mongol emperor of the Yuan dynasty.
Being unable to produce a successor makes the king dislikable to the Mongolian emperor. He falls in a position of betrayal by his own court. To avoid the humiliation of appointing his cousin as a Crown Prince, the Gongmin King hatches an immoral plan. He asks his lover, the Chief of the Royal Guard, to impregnate the Queen. To the King’s great disappointment, the two end up falling in love. This love triangle will have catastrophic consequences not only for those involved but for the fate of the kingdom itself.
