What’s the story?

Alba (Elena Llorens) is a young woman whose life is completely turned upside down when, after a party, she is drugged and sexually assaulted by four individuals. The next day, Alba wakes up on the beach without remembering what happened and with visible evidence of violence and rape. The first episode begins with Alba and Bruno, who are madly in love, leaving Madrid for their seaside hometown to reveal their relationship to their families and friends. When Alba learns that three of the rapists were Bruno’s best friends and discovers the of the 4th, the nightmare is just beginning for Alba. Bruno’s friends come from rich families who would do anything to protect their heirs. But, Alba Llorens wants justice and her aggressors to spend their youth in jail. A chain of events after the terrible night will have an impact on the lives of several people. Did Bruno rape Alba? Will she ever forgive Bruno?

Although the series is not based on a true events, it highlights contemporan social issues regarding sexually abused women. The similarities between the show and the reality of our days are striking and might mislead you to believe Alba is based on a true story.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ALBA AND FATMAGUL

Despite the geographical and time differences between the Turkish and Spanish stories, the main themes of both TV series remain the same. With a more focused script, “Alba” has only 13 episodes, compared to the 80 of ” Fatmagul.” The victim, Alba Llorens, is repeatedly the subject of brutal and sharp interrogations about her behavior on the night of the assault. From questioning her actions and dressing style, the series points out that often victims of rape are seen as the instigators. Even though Alba and Fatmagül come from different backgrounds, the fact that both girls face similar obstacles paints a bleak picture of our society.

FATMAGÜL’ÜN SUÇU NE?

Alba is the remake of “Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne?” which translates to “What is Fatmagül’s fault?” The original series starring Beren Saat and Engin Akyürek, is itself inspired by the work of Abdülkadir “Demirkan” Pirhasan or Vedat Türkali, a beloved Turkish writer. Fatmagül is part of the first wave of Turkish series that caused a global phenomenon alongside with Sıla, Binbir Gece, or Ezel by example.

WHERE WAS ALBA FILMED?

The filming of the drama began in June 2020 and wrapped after six months. The filming of “Alba” took place entirely in Spain, specifically in Madrid and various cities in the province of Alicante, such as Villajoyosa, Benidorm, and Finestrat. Playa del Bol Nou, located in the coastal town of Villajoyosa is the main location for the beach scenes. Moreover, the beautiful cliffs of Serra Gelada Natural Park on Camino Viejo, Camino del Faro, in Benidorm, also served as a prominent filming location for the TV drama series. The series coproduced by Atresmedia and Grupo Boomerang, premiered on 28 March 2021 in Spain. The screenplay was written by a team formed by Ignasi Rubio, Carlos Martín, Irma Correa, Javier Holgado, Susana López Carlos Vila.

The leading actress, Elena Rivera, confessed that the rape scene was the most difficult scene to film. Elena added that she felt sick and anxious for a few days after shooting.
