Their lives got stuck in a banal monotony. They work in a place of transition, in a gas station cafeteria built near the highway between Ankara and Istanbul. Both teenagers dream to live on their own, to explore the world.

Once, an important industrial town is now just the ugly face of economic waste and unemployment. Most of the area’s inhabitants have moved to big cities in search of opportunities. But Zehra, Olgun, and their friends are still caught somewhere between the past and an uncertain future. In the Turkish movie Araf / Somewhere in Between (2012), Neslihan Atagül Doğulu portrays Zehra, an 18-year-old girl who lives with her family in the village. Zehra dreams that love will take her away from her meaningless life. Her naive search for a brighter future ends when she falls in love with a silent, mysterious driver Mahur (Özcan Deniz)… who looks like trouble from a mile off.Zehra’s monotonous shifts got disturbed by the older truck driver, Mahur, who spends most of his time on the road. Actually, Mahur and Zehra have met before at a wedding and engaged and danced with unspoken eroticism. Zehra becomes fascinated, and her burning desire for Mahur turns into a tragic first love.
In Zehra’s eye, Mahur is a mature man rather than Olgun, the nice-looking boy who courts her. Zehra keeps their relationship a secret from her conservatory family and best-friend Derya, until it’s too late to hide anymore.
Meanwhile, her friend Olgun becomes visibly more frustrated, and stuck at home. He dreams of beheading his alcoholic and abusive father. It gets clear fast that Olgun is infatuated with Zehra, although she is not.
