“Atatürk” Film – A Triumph Beyond Borders Will Premiere in 2023, Despite Disney Plus Controversy

Oct 24, 2023 | Movies

The much-anticipated “Atatürk” series, which stirred controversy for not being featured on Disney Plus, is set to hit cinemas in two installments – the first film on November 3, 2023, and the second on January 5, 2024.

The grand premiere of the first film took place at the Atatürk Cultural Center, where Aras Bulut İynemli embodies the iconic father of Modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal.

Producer and CEO of Lanistar Medya, Saner Ayar, addressed the burning question posed to Aras Bulut İynemli regarding Disney Plus.

Ayar candidly stated,

“Every project has its spokesperson. In this case, that spokesperson is me, and I requested the same from our cast. They graciously complied. It’s my responsibility to provide the answers in this regard.”

It’s essential to understand that Disney’s decision wasn’t exclusive to Turkey; it was part of a global strategy to halt local productions outside of the U.S.

This affected all Disney-backed series in Turkey, not just “Atatürk”. The reason? The sheer magnitude of Atatürk’s legacy. We’re discussing a colossal world leader here. This strategic shift by Disney is not a decision made exclusively for Atatürk.

What producer Saner Ayar had to say regarding Disney Plus and Atatürk series?

“Disney’s decision is not specific to Turkey. Disney was on the verge of discontinuing local production in all markets outside of America. Why did no other projects raise objections, only Atatürk? The reason is the magnitude of Atatürk… In Turkey, all other series produced by Disney were halted, and they do not appear on the Disney platform.

None of these garnered attention like Atatürk. This is because we are talking about a great world leader like Atatürk. The strategic shift Disney made globally is not a decision made exclusively for Atatürk… I can comfortably tell you this. By the way, if it were on the Disney platform, only Disney members would be able to watch.

Today, all movie enthusiasts around the world will watch. It will be watched in all of continental Europe, 19 Arab countries, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, and Pakistan. Probably in China as well, and after January, it will premiere in the United States. As of September, it will be simultaneously available on one or several of the world’s largest platforms and later on all free TVs worldwide. If it had stayed on Disney, there wouldn’t have been this level of accessibility.”

Producer Saner Ayar emphasized, “They don’t know Mustafa Kemal Atatürk yet. As they get to know him, they’ll come to love him. The more they know, the more they’ll cherish this film, and it will serve him even more.”

Saner Ayar then shared insights into the production journey, saying,

“We decided to make this film in 2019 and prepared the screenplay. Initially, we approached HBO. However, after HBO decided to refrain from international productions, Disney stepped in and asked, ‘Can you produce this for us?’ We struck a deal with Disney. By the time we sealed the Disney agreement, we had already allocated 65% of the budget. We were on the verge of starting production; our cast was set, and our screenplay was finalized. We truly had a great collaboration with Disney. But with Disney’s international decision, local executives here had no say in the matter anymore.”

“Atatürk” is not just a film; it’s a powerful portrayal of Turkey’s history. As Mehmet Ada Öztekin aptly puts it:

“This is not a documentary; this is a drama… It tells the story of an orphaned child who becomes the father of an entire nation.”
