Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story – WHAT’S THE STORY? (Synopsis)

Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story focuses on the unimaginable crimes committed by the American serial killer Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer nicknamed the “Milwaukee Cannibal,” who, between 1978, and 1991 killed, raped, and dismembered 17 victims, all males between the ages of 14 and 32. His cruel crimes involved acts of necrophilia, cannibalism, and keeping parts of dismembered bodies as “souvenirs” or “a memory.” Even though, he got diagnosed by specialists with several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenic personality disorder and psychotic problems, the Milwaukee court declared him fit to stand trial because all of these crimes were committed while on full mental faculties. In February 1992, Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was found responsible for at least 17 crimes, and sentenced to 16 life sentences (over 600 years in prison) because the US state of Wisconsin does not have the death penalty. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960, in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jeffrey was a happy and energetic child until the age of 4, when he had surgery to correct a double hernia which changed him dramatically. He became increasingly lonelier with bizarre behavior and obsession with dead animals. By his early teens, he was tense in public and had no friends.

His parents divorced, and he started drinking heavily, ending up to drop the college. His remarried father, Lionel, insisted Dahmer join the military, where he enlisted in late December 1978 and was posted to Germany shortly after. Here, Jeffrey Dahmer becomes a combat doctor, expanding his knowledge about medications and drugs he will later use on his victims. His drinking problem persisted, and in early 1981 he was kicked out of the army. Then, he was sent live with his grandmother in Wisconsin. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer’s first murder was in June 1978, right after graduating high school at only 18 years old. Nine years later, he committed his second murder in the early 80s after spending a period in the army. His victims were predominantly African Americans, Asian, or Latin-American men whom he met in gay bars, malls, or bus stations.
He lured them to his home, drugged them, and then murdered them. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer would then engage in sexual acts with the corpses before dismembering and disposing of them in chemicals or eating them. Sometimes he kept the skulls and genitals as trophies or memories. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer took photographs of his victims at various stages of the crime so that he could later relive the sadistic experience. He also kept most of the victim’s IDs and bones. Jeffrey Dahmer was caught only after one of his victims managed to escape from the horror apartment and reported him to the police, who finally arrested him. Dahmer’s trial became a sensational case of police incompetence and systemic racism, which allowed America’s most notorious serial killer to continue his crime in plain sight for over a decade.

Jeffrey Dahmer’s case became particularly memorable because the authorities, completely ignored all the evidence. Two police officers got fired because they allowed Dahmer to hold a teenager captive in his home after he claimed they were in a romantic relationship. And, after Glenda Cleveland, the neighbor of Dahmer, made several complaints to the police about the smell of human fleash gone bad. While pregnant, her mother took around 26 pills per day, which his father will later point out as the main reason of his son being teh way he is. Jeffrey’s father also recalls having similar thoughts as his son when he was a teenger. Jeffrey Dahmer’s passion for dissecting animals started when his father thought taxidermy would be a good activity to spend time with his son. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer died shortly after his incarceration, being beaten to death by a cellmate, and his final words were: “I don’t care if I live or die. You can kill me.”

    Record audiences, controversies to match

The criticism of the series has multiplied almost as quickly as viewing hours. Critics have questioned the need to remake the story of Jeffrey Dahmer, one of history’s notorious criminals. Even though serial killer stories, series, and documentaries, bring great audiences, the victims’ families are not happy at all. Few spoke against the Netflix series, saying it brought back traumatic memories.

One of the most prominent critics of the series was Rita Isbell, sister of Errol Lindsey, one of the serial killer’s first victims. “I think Netflix should have asked if we (the victim’s families) minded or not doing the series. They didn’t ask me anything. They just did it. But I’m not greedy for money, and that’s what this series is about, Netflix trying to make money.” she wrote in an essay for the Insider journalists.
In 1992, Rita Isbell gave a strong emotional courtroom speech on behalf of the victims’ families at the killer’s trial. Netflix recreated that speech for dramatic effect.
The cousin of Errol Lindsey wrote a post that went viral on Twitter:
“I know true crimes are successful at the moment, but don’t you care about the victims? My family is furious. The show only makes them relive the traumas over and over again. And for what? How many more movies, series and documentaries do we need?”
The gay community is equally unhappy. Scott Gunkel, a representative of gay minority, confessed that Ryan Murphy’s series: “resuscitated a trauma of the LGBT community in Milwaukee.” An employee of a gay bar where Jeffrey Dahmer used to go said: “They all had families. It’s painful that there are always new movies and series coming out. It is difficult to move on,” he said. On the other hand, the actors also reacted Shaun J. Brown, who portrays Tracy Edwards, one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims, said:
“I’m not naive. I know stories about deaths and murders are sensational. However, please, when you watch the series, remember that these people were someone’s sons, best friends, cousins, uncles. That they had dreams and hopes that could no longer be realized”.
