Kal / Don’t Leave – WHAT’S THE STORY? (Synopsis)

The Netflix Turkish film Kal / Don’t Leave (2022) follows the bittersweet story of Semih (Burak Deniz), who struggles to accept an sudden breakup and desperately tries to move on after his girlfriend, Defne (Dilan Çiçek Deniz), unexpectedly leaves. The movie jumps back and forth between the past and present, depicting their love story through the eyes of Semih.

His family and friend are shocked by their separation, and nobody really knows why Defne left. Neither does Semih, a young boy with an erratic and weird personality but with a kind heart. Semih is a street artist working in an advertising agency. He loves tattoos and has his arms and chest covered.

In his pursuit of finding answers, he tries to focus on work but fails. By the movie’s end, Semih is already in a deep depression after taking refuge in his own memories to cope with his present.

Semih and Defne met through their group friends who make music and Nazim, who owns a bar, Dante, named by Semih. As the artist he is, Semih created a token of his love for Defne, a large mural of her face on the streets of Istanbul.
