The film Mest-i Aşk / Intoxicated by Love (2023) follows the story of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi (Parsa Piroufzar) and his dear friend Shams-e Tabrizi (Shahab Husseini). The Turkish-Iranian movie Mest-i Aşk (2023) promises to offer a new and refreshing perspective on Rumi’s story, focusing on his friendship with Shams, which greatly influenced his life, spirituality, and poetry.
Kimya Hatun (Hande Erçel) was adopted by Rumi Mevlana and his wife Kerra Hatun (Selma Ergeç) at a young age. Parsa Pirouzfar portrays Jalal ad-Din Balkhi / Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, the famous 13th-century Persian Sufi mystic and poet. Shahab Hosseini portrays Shams ad-Din Tabrizi, the best friend of Rumi, who greatly impacted his spirituality and poetry.

Heavily rooted in reality, the Turkish-Iranian film Mest-i Aşk / Intoxicated by Love (2023) follows the real events from the life of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi (also known as Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī).
Who is Rumi?
Rumi is a Persian poet and Sufi mystic from the 13th century. Rumi is known under many names, each of them reflecting certain stages in his life. He was born in 1207 in Balkh ( now Afghanistan) and received the name Jelaluddin (“The Rise of Faith”).
He was a good leader of his religious community, but he dint stand out in particular for his talent in poetry and song. As he approached the 40s ( towards the end of 1244), Rumi was lucky to meet a man who changed his life radically, Shams-e Tabrizi.
The friendship between the two grew stronger but was looked at with envy by part of Rumi’s sons and disciples. Four years after their meeting in 1248, Shams-e Tabrizi disappeared. The rumors say he was killed by someone close to them. Anyhow, it was Shams-e Tabrizi who inspired Rumi’s first poems and songs, and his great spiritual influence did not cease until Rumi died in 1273.
