Created from a Turkish perspective, the first season of Netflix’s docudrama series Rise of Empires: Ottoman focuses on the moment when Mehmed II becomes sultan at the age of 19. The first season of Netflix’s docudrama Rise of Empires: Ottoman follows the youth of the Turkish Sultan Muhammad II (Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu), also known as the conqueror of Constantinopole. The Netflix documentary presents the legendary actions of Sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror), who changed world history by conquering the fortress of Constantinople… the capital of the Byzantine Empire, a roman citadel that resisted invasions during 1100 turbulent years.
In the spring of 1435, on May 29, following a bloody siege under the command of the young Sultan Mehmed II, the forces of the Ottoman Empire managed to conquer the most important citadel of Christianity. The bloody siege led to a change of history through the fulminant rise of the Ottoman Empire for the next 300 years and is known as the biggest and cruelest blow received by Christianity throughout history.
Constantinople became and remained the capital of the Ottoman Empire until its disintegration in 1922, after the Ottomans were among those who lost the First World War. In 1930, after the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey, the city of Constantinople was renamed Istanbul.
Mehmed II, as a child found alone in a court where he knew nobody, Mara Branković (Tuba Büyüküstün) will become his biggest support, almost like a mother. Mara Branković, a Serbian princess, also known as Mara Despina Hatun, is the wife of Sultan Murad II and stepmother of Mehmed II.

This is Netflix’s description of the second season of the series Rise of Empires: Ottoman, named Mehmed VS Dracula, following the rivalry between Mehmed the Conqueror and Vlad Țepeș (Daniel Nuță). Vlad Țepeș is a ruthless Wallachian prince, also known as Vlad the Impaler or Dracula – the leader of the Christian army, whose signature was to impale his enemies.
The armies of Mehmed and Vlad faced off in Târgoviște, in June 1462, during a night attack. The conflict started after Mehmed II learned about Vlad Țepeș alliance with the Hungarian king, Matthias Corvinus, and ordered his army to capture him. Vlad the Impaler foiled this plan and invaded Bulgaria. In response, Mehmed II decided to conquer Wallachia.
Their armies clashed several times, the most significant battle was the night when Vlad Țepeș attacked the Ottoman camp and tried to kill the Sultan. Mehmed II escaped and marched to the capital of Wallachia, Târgoviste, where he found over 23,844 Turks and Bulgarians impaled. The Sultan and his army marched further up to Danbube to Brăila, which they burned before retreating to Adrianople. Both armies claimed victory.
