10. Shahmaran, is it a true story?
Şahmaran, the newest Turkish drama series on Netflix in 2023, draws heavily from the mythology of Shahmaran. Shahmaran is a creature half-woman and half-snake with its origins tracing back to the Hittites.
The legend has it that Şahmaran once fell in love with a young boy named Camasb, who stumbled upon her cave while trying to steal honey with his friends. The two fell in love and began living together in harmony in the mystical chamber filled with thousands of white snakes and Şahmaran’s vast knowledge of medicine and herbs.
However, after many years passed, the king of Tarsus fell gravely ill, and his vizier discovered that the only cure was the flesh of Şahmaran. Camasb, desperate to save the king and show his loyalty, betrayed Şahmaran and revealed her location to the people. Şahmaran instructed them to blanch her in an earthen dish, extract her essence, and feed her flesh to the king.
Şahmaran was captured and taken to the city, where was killed in a bathhouse named “Şahmaran Hamam” after her. The king consumed her flesh and was cured, but the vizier drank the extract and died. Camasb drank Şahmaran’s water and gained her knowledge, becoming a wise and revered physician. The legend of Şahmaran lives on in Turkish culture, symbolizing sacrifice, wisdom, and the consequences of betrayal.
