Burak Deniz, the Turkish actor, recently gave a statement at the prosecutor’s office regarding a criminal complaint made against him by his colleague Nilperi Şahinkaya. The complaint, made last September at the Adana Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, accused Deniz of disturbing the peace and tranquility of Şahinkaya and her friends while they were in a hotel lobby after participating in Adana Film Festival.

Burak Deniz also mentioned that he had apologized on social media for potentially causing discomfort with his jokes, but he clarified that the apology was not an admission of guilt.
Burak Deniz said in his statement:
“On September 15, 2022, I was staying at the Sheraton Grand Adana Hotel due to my work. We were together with the actors and other friends from the art community who attended the festival at the hotel. Nilperi Şahinkaya, whom I knew as a colleague before, and her friends were also there. When I saw them, I stopped by to greet them. After a short conversation, I left them and stated that I would return to my desk for the time being, but I could stop by again. They were also smiling during the conversation. And they didn’t make me feel like they didn’t want me to be with them in any way.

Atferward, I stopped by them again. During the conversation, I said that I was very bored with the night. After chatting for a while more normally, I left them… We joked with Nilperi, Emre, and Necmi Deniz during the conversation, we were laughing and chatting normally… When I left the table, I was walking towards the exit of place. They wished me a very sincere ‘Good evening’. I was asked by one of those present at that time, “Are you around tomorrow?” I returned to the table briefly. Meanwhile, Nilperi was leaving the table.
I did not make any insults toward Nilperi. There was no reason for me to be present anyway… Nilperi’s boyfriend was still there… Frankly, when I read the petition, I couldn’t believe it when I saw the allegation that he had made slanderous curses and threats against them until this stage.
I guess if I had made insults and threats as claimed, we wouldn’t have said “Good evening” to each other by laughing as if nothing had happened. They said that Nilperi was tired and went to her room.”

“Is there a problem?”
Afterward, Burak Deniz stated that there was a quarrel between Şahinkaya and Emre Yusufi with his friend Necmi Deniz and continued his statement with the following words:
“At this time, Necmi Deniz started to speak in a way that I could not understand at that moment. I think he was uncomfortable with my coming to the table. I said, ‘Is there a problem? If you have a problem we can talk to you. I said, ‘You don’t have to act on me. He suddenly stood up and said, raising his voice, “I’ll show you my problem.” Tension rose under the influence of the environment I was in. I said, ‘Show me then, what are you waiting for? Are you going to beat me?’ I said. We’re nose to nose.
The people around were also involved in the event. They separated us, but he and I did not hit each other in any way. In the meantime, I think his glasses fell off, but I did not hit Necmi Deniz in any way. Since I was involved in the incident to separate the other people at the time of the incident, his glasses may have fallen off during the fight, but I certainly did not. Then they left the place. In the history of the event, I was involved in more than one important project. “My apology is not an admission of guilt”
“After a statement was made that I humiliated Nilperi because she is a woman, I made a statement on social media. I sincerely apologized, explaining that I did not take any action against Nilperi’s woman and actress identity and that I may have disturbed her with the thought that the dosage of my jokes might have increased due to the influence of the environment while I was at the table.
This statement is certainly not an admission of guilt. It is a statement made out of courtesy and in good faith. Complainants may be uncomfortable with my coming to them. However, they should have told me this, they didn’t make them feel uncomfortable as they didn’t tell me… Until Necmi Deniz spoke to me as I explained above after Nilperi left… I did not insult or threaten the parties. I didn’t hit anyone, I didn’t hurt anyone… The parties didn’t make a statement that they didn’t want me to talk to them, and they say the same thing in their petitions. Therefore, I did not commit the crime of disturbing peace and tranquility. I do not accept the accusations brought against me and demand a decision of non-prosecution.”
