New Turkish TV series Kızıl Goncalar (2023), starring Özcan Deniz, suspended by FOX due to censorship by RTÜK as a result of 31,000 complaints allegedly stemming from religious groups
The recent decision by the Ankara Bölge İdare Mahkemesi to uphold the suspension and hefty fine imposed on the new Turkish series Kızıl Goncalar (2023) by RTÜK has sparked significant upheaval in the television landscape.
The show’s director, Ömür Atay, has vehemently criticized the censorship measures, drawing attention to a broader issue plaguing the Turkish industry.

The series, portraying the intersecting paths of a fictional cult named ‘Faniler’ and a secular family, sparked controversy upon its release. RTÜK swiftly initiated penalty proceedings in response to the complaints.
The fine, amounting to 9 million Turkish Lira, was officially notified to Huzur Radyo TV Anonim Şirketi, which owns FOX.
Citing violations against the principles of ‘national and moral values, general ethics, and the protection of the family,’ RTÜK’s penalties prompted FOX and the production company, Gold Film, to initiate legal battles.
Unless a court order for ‘suspension of execution’ is obtained, and the 3rd episode of ‘Kızıl Goncalar’ scheduled for January 8th post-holiday will not air. Instead, RTÜK-selected documentaries will be broadcasted on that evening and the following week.
