Devastating 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Turkey and Syria – More than 2,600 deaths and 11,119 injured confirmed by the authorities

On February 6th, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the southern region of Turkey near the city of Gaziantep, at 20 km from Kahramanmaraș Province. The morning earthquake was followed by over 150 aftershocks, including a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in the middle of the day, causing widespread destruction and death.

The official death numbers raised to over 2,600, with 1,651 dead in Turkey and at least 968 dead in Syria. However, the real number of casualties is expected to be much higher, with the American Geophysical Institute estimating the death numbers to be much higher, around 10,000.

The Turkish Minister of Health, Fahrettin Koca, declared that 11,119 people are injured in Turkey, while thousands have been left homeless in Turkey and Syria due to the collapse of numerous buildings. The Turkish Ministry of Education has announced that schools across the country will be closed for a week.

The international community, around 45 countries, offered support to Turkey, with the country accepting search and rescue teams, including from Romania and USA. Russia has also offered its help to Turkey and Syria, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad warmly accepting the offer. Russia is the most powerful foreign power in support of the Syrian regime.
