The Turkish movie Kağıttan Hayatlar / Paper Lives starring Çağatay Ulusoy follows the story of Mehmet, who runs a junk collection warehouse in the slums of Istanbul, where he helps homeless children and teenagers. One day Mehmet’s life becomes more fun but also more complicated when he discovers an 8-year-old boy, Ali. He was hiding in a waste trolley brought into the warehouse by one of his workers. Apparently, Ali was sent away by his mother to protect him from his abusive stepfather.
Mehmet decides to take care of the boy, and he does it with such a passion that he endangers his health and other friendships. It became an obsession for him, to do the right thing for Ali. Their bond grows up quickly, and they become inseparable. At the same time this friendship triggers painful feelings in Mehmet, related to his childhood traumas. At one point, it becomes clear that he cannot keep Ali and then he tries to take him home to his mom. That’s when the story takes a new twist.
